Winter Weather Procedures

Dear Families:

With winter weather here, we want to remind you about how the Burnaby School District shares weather-related school closures.

All schools will remain OPEN, unless there is heavy snowfall, damage or other circumstances – such as a power outage – that make it impossible to open for instruction. The District will do its best to communicate school or district wide closures by 6:30 am. This information will be posted on the front page of the district website www.burnabyschools.ca. However, please keep in mind that there may be situations where this is not possible – again, such as a power outage.

Another way to learn about school closures is on local news stations (online, radio and TV), some of which are:

  • CBC AM 690 radio
  • News AM 1130 radio
  • CKNW AM 980 radio
  • Fairchild AM 1470 radio
  • Global TV
  • CBC TV
  • CityNews
  • CTV BC

Student safety is a responsibility we share with families. Please walk your child to the door of the school if you are unsure whether or not the school is open. If for any reason you feel that your student cannot travel safely to school then please – as you normally would – notify the school that your child will be absent.

Thank you for working with us to keep our school community safe.

Hip Hop Program Notice

Please note that a notice is being sent home today for the Hip Hop prorgram happening at Sperling. The previous two times, the cost of Hip Hop has been covered by a provincial grant. Unfortunately, this grant has been discontinued and therefore we are asking each student to pay $10.00. Should this cost prove to be a burden for families, please contact Mr. MacLean to discuss.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Sperling is pleased to offer a unique, in‐school Hip‐Hop dance program provided by 1‐Vibe Entertainment, a popular school‐wide dance program run in many schools around the lower mainland for over 20 years. Dance instructors have been working with all classes since Monday, January 6 and will continue until Friday, January 17. No student will be denied access to an activity due to an inability to pay. Please contact Mr. Maclean to discuss a fee waiver, if necessary.

The Program includes:

  • 4‐5 lessons during P.E. time
  • Concert on Friday, January 17 @ 1:00pm for parents/guardians to attend
  • Only $10.00 per child

Please fill out the tear‐off below with the lesson fee of $10.00 and return it to the school by Tuesday, January 14, 2020. Preferred method of payment is through SchoolCash online.

Remember to return the slip to your teacher below, even if you have paid online.

Thanks for your support,

Sperling Teachers

Holiday Pancake Breakfast

PANCAKE & PAJAMAS PARTY

Calling all Santa’s Little Helpers!

Dear Sperling Families,

Holiday season is upon us again. The new Hot Lunch Committee along with our PAC and school staff would like to invite all of you to our Pancake Breakfast on:

Friday December 20, 2019
9:00AM to 12:00PM

The format will be different this year. Classes will be assigned time slots with their buddy classes and parents are welcome to join their child(s) class.

The pancake breakfast depends on the generosity of our community. We need lots of parent volunteers in order for the event to run smoothly. Please RSVP on the attendance/volunteer slip below and return to the office by Wednesday December 11. Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.

We look forward to seeing all your smiling faces.

Happy Holidays,

The Hot Lunch Committee, Sperling PAC and Sperling Staff
